E4-34kD and E1B-55kD promote the export of adenovirus mRNA. Dobbelstein et al. showed that the complex of the two proteins shuttles between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. The shuttling occurs only when the two proteins form a complex. E4-34kD contains an NES signal (83-92), as well as a nuclear retention signal (234-251). The nuclear retnetion signal is masked when E1B forms a complex.

User Input
Accurate identification of NESs is difficult because many sequences in the genome match the NES consensus. Therefore, some published NESs may be mistakenly identified. Please help us improve the accuracy of NESdb by providing either a positive or negative flag for the NES in this entry. Supporting comments are required to process the flag.
