AtAGO1 is the silencing effector protein for plant microRNAs. Mammalian pre-miRNAs are exported by Exportin-5 and processed by Dicer into mature miRNAs in the cytosol before loading into AGO1. However there is no Dicer homologs in plants. Bologna et al. found that AtAGO1 contains putative NES in the N-coil region which is conserved across plant homologs. Nuclear export activity of the NES is LMB-sensitive and can be abolished by mutations in GFP-fusions and full-length proteins. The authors also found that plant miRNAs are loaded onto AGO1 before CRM1-mediated export. Sequence matches a traditional NES consensus and is part of the disordered N-coil domain.
