HP1-gamma is a member of the heterochromatin protein family which is implicated in transcriptional silencing in heterochromatin. These proteins are later found to have diverse roles in the cell. Charo et al. reported that HP1-gamma is also found in the cytoplasm and interacts with actin in both cytoplasm and nucleus. Two studies found that LMB caused nuclear accumulation of the protein. The NES has not been identified yet.
