An3 protein possesses ATPase and RNA helicase activity with the characteristic seven characteristic motifs of DEAD box. It shuttles between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. The nuclear export activity is contained within the first 21 aa at the N-terminus. Deletion of the first 21 aa would abolish in vitro binding and result in nuclear retention of An3. Interestingly, a point mutation outside the proposed NES region (E389Q) will reduce both ATPase activity and its nuclear export in vivo.
