pUL47 is one of the HSV tegument proteins proposed to shuttle between the nucleus and cytoplasm and binds to RNA transcripts. Residues 658-667 target an NLS-containing reporter protein to the cytoplasm in a LMB-sensitive manner. Funk et al. also found this protein to have nuclear export activity using Nuclear EXport Trapped by RAPamycin (NEX-TRAP). Assay for LMB sensitivity using Myc-tagged protein showed exclusive nuclear localization of pUL47 and therefore LMB sensitivity was not established. Putative NES identified in this study is different from that of Williams et al.
