Reducible diagram

(a) Simplest reducible diagram formed by two pairs of cross-linked fold blocks, and (b) reduction to independent loops. The parameters ln label the lengths of adjacent unfolded segments. This step favors local nucleation or zipping so that either l1 + l3 < l2  or  l2 < l1 + l3 is favored entropically.
