Zinc-binding motifs are stable structures, and they rarely undergo conformational changes upon binding their target. This entry represents a family of proteins which appears to have a highly conserved zinc finger domain at the C-terminal end, described as -C-X2-CH-X3-H-X5-C-X2-C-. A typical MerR regulator is comprised of distinct domains that harbor the regulatory (effector-binding) site and the active (DNA-binding) site. Their conserved N-terminal domains contain predicted winged HTH motifs that mediate DNA binding, while the dissimilar C-terminal domains bind specific coactivator molecules.
