It also includes the protein OatA. The pathogenic bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, is able to cause persistent infections due to its ability to resist the immune defence system. Lysozyme, a cell wall-lytic enzyme, is one of the first defence compounds induced in serum and tissues after the onset of infection. S. aureus has complete resistance to lysozyme action by O-acetylating its peptidoglycan (PG) by O-acetyltransferase (OatA) [, ]. Staphylococcus bacteria are one of the only bacterial genera that are resistant to lysozyme and tend to colonise the skin and mucosa of humans and animals []. OatA is an integral membrane protein. This entry also includes NolL proteins. NolL-dependent acetylation is specific for the fucosyl penta-N-acetylglucosamine species. In addition, the NolL protein caused elevated production of lipo-chitin oligosaccharides (LCOs). The NolL protein obtained from Rhizobium loti (Mesorhizobium loti) functions as an acetyl transferase [].; GO: 0016747 transferase activity, transferring acyl groups other than amino-acyl groups

The dentin matrix acidic phosphoprotein 1 (DMP1) gene has been mapped to human chromosome 4q21 []. DMP1 is a bone and teeth specific protein initially identified from mineralised dentin. DMP1 is primarily localised in the nuclear compartment of undifferentiated osteoblasts. In the nucleus, DMP1 acts as a transcriptional component for activation of osteoblast-specific genes like osteocalcin. During the early phase of osteoblast maturation, Ca2+ surges into the nucleus from the cytoplasm, triggering the phosphorylation of DMP1 by a nuclear isoform of casein kinase II. This phosphorylated DMP1 is then exported out into the extracellular matrix, where it regulates nucleation of hydroxyapatite. DMP1 is a unique molecule that initiates osteoblast differentiation by transcription in the nucleus and orchestrates mineralised matrix formation extracellularly, at later stages of osteoblast maturation [].
