Mutations of LARGE in mouse and human cause dystroglycanopathies, a disease associated with hypoglycosylation of the membrane protein alpha-dystroglycan (alpha-DG) and consequent loss of extracellular ligand binding. Glycosyltransferase family 8 GT8 from CAZY comprises enzymes with a number of known activities; lipopolysaccharide galactosyltransferase (2.4.1.44 from EC), lipopolysaccharide glucosyltransferase 1 (2.4.1.58 from EC), glycogenin glucosyltransferase (2.4.1.186 from EC), inositol 1-alpha-galactosyltransferase (2.4.1.123 from EC).
