Assignment of this protein family as cysteinyl-tRNA synthetase is controversial, supported by PubMed:11333988 but challenged by PubMed:14679218. Members of this family from Deinococcus radiodurans (bacterial) and Methanococcus jannaschii (archaeal), species lacking a conventional cysteinyl-tRNA synthetase (Cys--tRNA ligase), have been indicated to be a novel form of that enzyme, perhaps distantly related to class I tRNA ligases. The member from Thermotoga maritima is presumed to be a second isozyme of cysteinyl-tRNA synthetase.
