During flagellar morphogenesis in Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli, flagellar hook-length control protein (FliK) controls the length of the hook by directly measuring the hook length [, ]. It is considered unlikely that FliK functions as a molecular ruler for determining hook length, but that it is more likely to be employing a novel mechanism. The deduced amino acid sequences of FliK proteins from S. typhimurium and E. coli have molecular masses of 41,748 and 39,246 Da, respectively, and are fairly hydrophilic [].
