Chorismic acid is a important intermediate in the synthesis of aromatic compounds, such as aromatic amino acids, p-aminobenzoic acid, folate and ubiquinone. Shikimate kinase catalyses the phosphorylation of the 3-hydroxyl group of shikimic acid using ATP.
