It is the committed step in the succinylase pathway by which bacteria synthesize L-lysine and meso-diaminopimelate, a component of peptidoglycan. The enzyme is trimeric and displays the left-handed parallel alpha-helix (LbH) structural motif encoded by the hexapeptide repeat motif.
