Members are found in bacterial genomes if and only if they encoded for anoxygenic photosynthetic systems similar to that of Rhodobacter capsulatus and other alpha-Proteobacteria. Members often are encoded in the same operon as subunits of the protoporphyrin IX magnesium chelatase, and were once designated BchO. No literature supports a role as an actual subunit of magnesium chelatase, but an accessory role is possible, as suggested by placement by its probable hydrolase activity.
