AfGGGPS catalyzes the formation of an ether linkage between sn-glycerol-1-phosphate (G1P) and geranylgeranyl diphosphate (GGPP), the committed step in archaeal lipid biosynthesis. Therefore, it has been proposed that PcrB-like proteins are either prenyltransferases or are involved in lipoteichoic acid biosynthesis although the exact function is still unknown.
