Several members of the family are from species not known to accumulate PHAs, including Oceanobacillus iheyensis and Bacillus subtilis. However, polymer formation is not required for there be a role for 3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase; it may be members of this family have the same function in those species.; GO: 0003858 3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase activity.
