It is the first enzyme of a pathway of tyrosine degradation via homogentisate. L-tyrosine + 2-oxoglutarate = 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate + L-glutamate. Several plant enzyme designated as probable tyrosine aminotransferases are very closely related to an experimentally demonstrated nicotianamine aminotransferase, an enzyme in a siderophore (iron uptake chelator) biosynthesis pathway are included in this family. ; GO: 0008483 transaminase activity, 0030170 pyridoxal phosphate binding, 0006519 amino acid and derivative metabolic process.
