Members of this bacterial protein family bear homology
to glutamate--cysteine ligase, an enzyme in the two-step
pathway of glutathione (GSH) biosynthesis, but are
distinctly different. Among the bacterial genomes that
carry the uncharacterized methyltransferase (TIGR03438)
and conserved hypothetical protein TIGR03440, this
protein is found in a subset, always in the vicinity of
these other genes. Conserved hypothetical protein
TIGR03442 is found in these same genomes. The role of
this cassette is probably biosynthetic, but the product
is unknown.
